Japanese post-panamax bulker delivered
Japan’s Namura Shipbuilding Co Ltd has delivered a 101,314-dwt post-panamax bulk carrier, Cape Ace, to Kawasaki Kisen Co Ltd, featuring a range of innovative features that promise to raise vessel productivity.
The 250m-long vessel has a beam of 43m, and a draught of 12.9m. This hull configuration accommodates six cargo holds and facilitates the carriage of more cargo than a conventional panamax design.
The bulk carrier has a Namura flow Control Fin on its stern and is also equipped with a Rudder Fin. Developed by the shipyard, these hull features improve the ship’s propulsive performance by optimising water flow both ahead and aft of the propeller.
Hull resistance has been reduced with a low-friction antifouling coating, and the vessel has an electronically-controlled MAN B&W 6S60ME-C8.5 main engine to reduce fuel consumption. The scrubber-fitted bulker also has a ballast water treatment system.
The Cape Ace was commissioned in December and is now deployed on a long-term contract, carrying iron ore and coal for a Japanese steel mill.
