Tokyo Kisen Co. and e5 Lab have marked the launch of the electric tug, Taiga, in a ceremony held at Kanagawa Dockyard where the vessel is being completed prior to delivery in December.

The tug combines large-capacity lithium-ion batteries developed by e5 Lab with an L-Drive propulsion system from IHI Power Systems. The tug will also have an ABB DC Grid, the first installation in Japan, which is more efficient than other electric propulsion systems, according to the manufacturer. The project team also worked with OSD-IMT, a specialist ship design house, to provide a good working and living environment for crew members.

The Taiga will be deployed as a harbour tug mainly in the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki. Power equipment on a floating pier will provide power for the vessel when it enters service.

Tokyo Kisen is active in the decarbonisation of ports and harbours with a specific focus on the environmental impact of tugs. Meanwhile, e5 Lab’s focuses on the sustainability of coastal shipping business, environmental protection, and improving the working environment of ships’ crews.
