Ice research project

The government of Canada recently announced a CAD 3.2 million contribution for a research project that aims to improve dynamic positioning (DP) operations in ice-covered areas.

Led by the Centre for Marine Simulation (CMS), the five-year research programme’s goal is to increase the safety and efficiency of oil and gas operations in ice environments by enhancing dynamic positioning (DP) system technologies.
As the commercialisation partner of the project, Norway-based Kongsberg Maritime will provide DP equipment, engineering services and a financial contribution to the research team. Kongsberg says it is optimistic that the research findings will ultimately result in the development and commercialisation of a specialised DP system module for ice operations.
The recent funding has been provided by the Atlantic Innovation Fund, administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. It total, the research project has a value of CAD 8.5 million.
