Hybrid upgrade for offshore wind support vessel

Acta Centaurus has been chartered by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind to support the installation and commissioning of 33 V164-8.4 MW MHI Vestas turbines at the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm in the German Exclusive Zone (Source: Acta Marine)

The recently delivered Acta Centaurus, a DP2 walk-to-work offshore wind construction support vessel owned by Netherlands-based Acta Marine, is to have a hybrid drive, batteries and an energy management system supplied and installed by Wärtsilä.

The technology company will also upgrade existing vessel systems to make them suitable for hybrid operation. The set-up will improve the vessel’s operating efficiency and save fuel by ensuring that variable power requirements are met by engines operating at optimal load at all times. Vessels of this type have a high dynamic positioning load and a flexible operating profile; hybrid arrangements can therefore produce a CO2 saving of about 15%, Wärtsilä said.

The upgrade is due to take place during the fourth quarter of the year.
