Hull Vane® on new patrol vessel for Port of Rotterdam

Rendering of the RPA-8

The vessel will be delivered in summer 2017. The order followed a public tender process in which several shipbuilders competed with their designs. Kooiman’s design aims for minimal emissions and a minimum of wave formation. Kooiman was able to install a smaller propulsion plant of 736 kW instead of 939 kW as would be normal on this vessel size, which offers cost saving, reduced ventilation requirements, reduced exhaust systems, a lower noise level and more space in the engine room. Located below the stern, the vessel will be equipped with Hull Vane® to influence the stern wave pattern and create hydrodynamic lift. This results in a reduction of the ship’s total resistance, Hull Vane says. The vessel has a parallelhybrid propulsion installation from Holland Ship Electric. This system allows the boat to be sailed in dieselelectric mode up to 25 km/h on one of the main engines, or with both main engines engaged in diesel-direct mode from 25 km/h to 35 km/h.

Dutch yard Kooiman recently started building a 25m-long patrol vessel for the Rotterdam Port Authority.
