Houlder, a London-based ship design and engineering firm, has won two contracts from Marine Scotland, the Scottish Government Directorate that oversees management of the country’s seas.

The contracts involve design and construction support for a scientific research ship and a compliance vessel. The design firm will use its experience in regulations, hybrid vessel design, and operational and technical knowledge, Houlder said.

The research vessel will provide increased capacity for more scientists, as well as carrying a wide range of scientific equipment, enabling more research projects.

The compliance vessel will be designed for operation in Scotland’s 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone, which lies in the challenging sea region spanning the North Atlantic and the North Sea. Amongst other operations, it will operate on Emission Control Area compliance.

Recent projects completed by Houlder include acting as technical advisor to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company on the design and build of the company’s latest battery hybrid ferry. The firm also worked on the design and build of the RRS Sir David Attenborough, built recently at shipbuilder Cammell Laird, in Birkenhead.
