Cantabrian Sea based Gondan Shipbuilders has secured a contract from Haugesund-headquartered Østensjø Rederi to build a second tug based on the Skilsteknisk ST-933 design. The order comes just nine months after the first contract and is the 23rd vessel order placed by the Norwegian owner at Gondan.
The two 50m-long DP2 sister vessels have a bollard pull of 150 tonnes and are designed to operate in harsh conditions that frequently prevail in the seas of Northern Europe. A single high-powered combined thruster will facilitate operations from both bow and stern.
The methanol-ready vessels are based on a design optimised with advanced computational simulation tools. They have a direct current electrical network enabling the future integration of batteries or fuel cells without the need for structural modifications.
The tugs are likely to be deployed on towing, escort and offshore support operations.
