German cruise ship to have SCR retrofit from MAN

The cruise vessel Amadea in Hamburg

MAN Energy Solutions is to supply selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for the two MAN 7L58/64 four-stroke main engines on board the German cruise vessel, Amadea, chartered by Phoenix Reisen GmbH Bonn and managed by BSM Cruise Services. The project is the latest initiative by Phoenix to raise its environmental profile and will enable the vessel to meet emission standards in the Norwegian Heritage Fjord sector of the market.

The engine company’s after-sales division, MAN PrimeServ, will undertake the installations next September, transforming the engines from Tier 0 to Tier III emission level, thereby meeting Norway’s requirements. NOx pollution will be reduced by 90% as a result, and the SCR systems will kick in from engine loads of 15%, enabling clean operation during slow sailing in fjords, for example, or close to ports in populous areas.

Head of MAN PrimeServ Turbocharger & Exhaust Gas Treatment, Alexander Schäfer, commented: “The concept of clean cruising is a major, coming trend within the cruise industry, and the Amadea therefore runs on high-quality marine diesel oil alone. With our SCR solution, Phoenix and BSM are establishing themselves as trailblazers within the segment in terms of emission reduction.”

The Amadea, also known as Das Traumschiff, is well-known in Germany as providing the set for a popular television series.
