Fleet investment: Four new fuel-efficient ferries for Stena Line

The vessels will have roro capacity of more than 3,000 lane meters in a drive-through configuration and will accommodate about 1,000 passengers and offer a full range of passenger services. The main engines will be gas ready, prepared to be fuelled by either methanol or liquefied natural gas (LNG). Planned delivery is 2019 and 2020, with an option for another four vessels. The contract is subject to Stena board approval by the end of April 2016. The vessels will be optimised for efficiency and flexibility and it is planned to use them within Stena Lines route network in northern Europe. “During the course of the past 24 months our engineering staff has managed to develop a design that is not only 50% larger than today’s standard RoPax vessels, but more importantly, incorporates the emission reduction and efficiency initiatives that have been developed throughout the Stena Group during the past years,” said Mr Carl-Johan Hagman, managing director of Stena Line. “We foresee a continued demand growth for short sea services in northern Europe and in many other parts of the world.”
Finland’s Deltamarin Group also said it has been awarded a comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) package for Stena’s new vessels to be built by AVIC Weihai. Deltamarin will work in the project not only as a designer but also as a provider of comprehensive project management services to support AVIC Weihai Shipyard in the vessel construction, it said. Deltamarin’s engineering package includes approval design, support in procurement handling and detail design. Deltamarin Floating Construction will carry out the construction management in close cooperation with AVIC, and supplement the construction team. The project management services also include master planning, procurement of the project materials and material management, project information management and site supervision.
