First LNG-powered tug in the Middle East

Sketch of the LNG-powered harbour tug

The 29m-long tug is the first of a series of nine such vessels to be built and operated by DDW. The project is part of a 'green' initiative launched by the Dubai government, and is intended to set an example for promoting environmental sustainability throughout the region.
Wärtsilä will supply the ship design, two nine-cylinder 20DF dual-fuel engines, steerable thrusters, the automation equipment, and the LNGPac system, including the bunkering station, the LNG tank and related process equipment, as well as the control and monitoring system.
TASNEEF, the classification society in the UAE, will provide classification and advisory services, issue mandatory certificates for ship registration, and provide technical and engineering services as well as training for the tugs.

Dubai-based Drydocks World (DDW), who is currently building the first LNG-powered habour tug in the Middle East region, has contracted Wärtsilä to design and supply the propulsion and other equipment for the vessel.
