First “globally available” autonomous maritime test area opens in Finland

Rolls-Royce's vision on future autonomous ship

The area of open water, extending almost 18km on its longest side, also offers an opportunity to carry out tests in ice during winter months.
Named the Jaakonmeri Test Area after Dr Jaako Talvitie, who was instrumental in contributing to its creation prior to his untimely passing, the designated area of sea is being managed by Finland’s DIMECC Ltd, a co-creation company heading the One Sea – Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem project.
The founding partners in the One Sea ecosystem are ABB, Cargotec (MacGregor and Kalmar), Ericcson, Meyer Turku, Rolls-Royce, Tieto and Wärtsilä. DIMECC expects the first tests to be undertaken in the early months of 2018 but advises that earlier tests can be arranged if required.

A special test area in the Gulf of Bothnia, off the municipality of Eurajoki on Finland’s west coast, is now available to companies wishing to undertake real-life testing of autonomous maritime vessels, navigating systems, and other related technologies.
