Finland's new icebreaker named at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard

The Polaris will be delivered at the end of 2016

The naming ceremony of the new-generation icebreaker for the Finnish Transport Agency recently took place at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

The 110m-long, 24m-wide Polaris will be the first icebreaker with dual-fuel engines capable of using both low-sulphur marine diesel oil and liquefied natural gas.
The vessel's deadweight tonnage at design draught will be about 3,000 tonnes. The highly-automated icebreaker will operate with a crew of 16. The new icebreaker has been designed especially for the demanding icebreaking operations in the Baltic Sea, and it will be fitted for oil recovery and emergency towing.
Polaris will be classified by Lloyd's Register. Although it will be stationed in the Baltic Sea where there is only seasonal ice cover, it is designed according to the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Polar Class rules.
After Christmas, Polaris will be floated out of the construction hall and moved to the outfitting quay for final outfitting and commissioning. Once the vessel has been delivered in 2016, the ownership will be transferred to the state-owned shipping company Arctia Shipping.
