Suomenlahden Telakka Oy, a ship repair yard focusing on small commercial vessels operating in the Gulf of Finland, has commissioned Danfoss Editron to replace the propulsion system on board the ferry, Prostvik 1.
The 1983-built vessel, 50m-long and capable of carrying about 140 passengers and 30 vehicles, is to have its existing diesel-mechanical machinery replaced with a diesel-electric drivetrain system. As well as raising efficiency and cutting emissions, the new installation will meet exacting weight and size parameters set by state-owned ferry operator, Finferries.
Danfoss Editron Sales Support manager, Atte Yrjola, commented: “Our direct current grid distribution and software-based approach allows for a much greater intelligent management of power distribution by enabling variable speed diesel generators. It also allows us to identify the optimal number of running engines needed in various weather conditions, ensuring the most efficient operation, offering additional fuel savings and reducing maintenance costs.”
The Prostvik 1, one of only two vessels deployed on the route between Nauvo and Korpoo, will arrive at the shipyard for conversion in late August. The project, which is expected to take about six months, will be carried out in the shipyard’s heated indoor hall.
