DNV GL rolls out electronic certification

Following several years of pilot project with ship owners and flag states, the new system will provide significant efficiency gains for vessel operators, charterers, regulators and crew, saving time and money. As a result of the pilot projects, almost 50 flag states have already given the go-ahead for the classification society to issue electronic certificates on their behalf. More countries are likely to accept the new system in the near future.
DNV GL now published certificates on a customer’s portal immediately after completion of a ship survey. This provides all relevant parties with immediate access from anywhere in the world. The electronic certificates are secured with a digital signature and a unique tracking number to validate their authenticity.
One company involved in the pilot tests was Teekay Offshore which is planning to move its fleet over to the new electronic certification system as soon as possible. Fleet manager Morten Nygaard said: “The electronic certificate regime offered by DNV GL has provided us with a unique advantage in the contemporary market, where leverage from digitalised high-end efficient work processes plays an integral role. It is our intention to benefit from the new regime with the shortest possible time frames.”

Classification society DNV GL has beaten its competitors to the post with the launch of electronic certificates across its entire fleet.
