Design deal for zero emission ferry

Through a decade of research and development work, including cooperation with Sintef Ocean, Havyard LAB has now arrived at a three-step tool with a digital twin of the ship in a virtual ocean (Source: Havyard)

Norwegian group Havyard Design & Solution AS said it has been chosen as designer for two new battery-powered ferries to be operated by Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 ASA. No yard has yet been selected to build the vessel.

Havyard will develop the vessels using Havyard LAB's new virtual three-step tool. It is introduced to allow shipping companies to perfect ship designs step by step. This process will result in a ship that is carefully adapted to its work and the waters in which it will be operating, while also cutting energy consumption, emissions and operating costs.

“Going forward the parties will work closely together to optimise the design for energy effective operations, towards a final design contract in connection with the choice of shipyard to construct and deliver the ferries,” Havyard said.
