Damen wins another Combi Freighter order from German owner

German short-sea shipowner, Reederei Gerdes, has ordered a second Combi Freighter 3850 from Damen Cargo Vessels, following delivery of the Benabell G in September last year. The newbuilding will be named Kalli G.

The fuel-efficient design is said to incorporate several innovative features. The 89.7m-long vessels have relatively small 1,104-kW main engines but can still carry 3,850 tonnes of cargo at more than ten knots, thanks to an optimised hull form and reduced resistance. The tank top in the cargo hold is reinforced to bear 15 tonnes/m2 and the vessels can accommodate 108 containers in the hold and 64 on deck.

Gerdes and associated chartering company, over-C GmbH & Co, will deploy the Kalli G in short-sea coastal trades. The vessel will have NAABSA notation – ‘not always afloat but safely aground’ – enabling calls at small tidal ports.

Dennis Clavier, over-C director, commented: “The size, in combination with its NAABSA notation, make the CF3850 a good vessel for calling smaller tidal ports, for example in the UK. The movable bulkheads, which can be used as partial tweendecks, offer flexibility to carry grain, animal feed, fertiliser, steel, but also project cargoes from time to time.”

Damen Cargo Vessels built four of the vessels for stock last year. All have now been taken into service and the company has won orders for 13 more ships of the same design.
