Damen Shipyards Group has won a contract from civil engineering contractor, Ingenieria de Topografia y Caminos S.A. (T&C), to provide a customised cutter suction dredger (CSD) for the Costanera Sur project. The CSD500 will operate on the southern bank of the Rio Paraguai in Asunción, the country’s capital, to prevent the frequent flooding that regularly affects parts of the city.

The dredger will speed up the ambitious project, which has a tight deadline. The operation will include the relocation of nine million cubic metres of sand, a process that must be completed within two years. Damen has been able to meet the tight deadline partly because the shipbuilder has a strategy of building for stock, but also because the CSD500 can be delivered in modules and reassembled on delivery at the landlocked location. At that time, Damen will also provide crew training.

T&C vice president, Francisco J. Griño, explained: “We purchased the reliable Damen dredger to be able ot meet our strict deadlines. The total project is scheduled to take five years and is dependent on the timely production of sand. The CSD500 will boost our dredging capacity.”

Damen will provide the CSD500 with options specified by T&C including anchor booms, a spud carriage pontoon, and a deck crane.
