Damen Shipyards Group has closed a deal with Turkey’s Albayrak Group for two tugs to be deployed in West Africa – one in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, and one in Pointe-Noire, Congo. The shipbuilder’s strategy of building for stock will enable delivery of the ASD Tug 2111 tug for Guinea and the ASD Tug 2813 for Congo within five to six months of contract signing.

The ASD Tug 2111 is being built at Damen Shipyards Changde in China. The 21m-long vessel will have a bollard pull of 50 tonnes. The more powerful ASD Tug 2813, with a length of 28m and a bollard pull of up to 83 tonnes, is under construction at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam.

The Albayrak Group, one of Turkey’s largest corporates, is customising the standard tug designs with additional features, equipping the vessels to meet local flag and climate requirements.

Albayrak Group general manager, Yunus Yilmaz, commented: “We initially turned to Damen based on the good reputation of its vessels. When we began our discussions, we were very pleased to discover that Damen was able to offer a delivery time within half a year from the signing of our contract. We view this collaboration with Damen as the beginning of a long-term partnership as we set about expanding our fleets in the eight ports we currently manage.”
