Perth-based towage and port operations provider, Engage Marine, has ordered three ASD Tug 3212 from Damen Shipyards Group. The 85-tonne bollard pull units, based on a design that is one of Damen’s “Next Generation Tugs Series”, will provide towage services at the Port of Abbot Point, a deep-water coal terminal in northern Queensland. Features of the ASD Tug 3212 include good crew comfort, operational flexibility and energy efficiency, Damen said. A modular approach to IMO Tier III NOx requirements means that the vessels can be easily adapted to meet future regulations when necessary.

Mark Malone is Engage Marine’s CEO. “We selected Damen as they are a world-class tug builder and the ASD 3212 vessels are a proven design, well-suited to the prevailing conditions of this operation,” he said. “Damen’s ability to deliver on time, high-quality assets with dedicated support through the build, delivery process and locally, once in operation, give us confidence in reliability from the start.”

The shipbuilder’s strategy of building for stock means that the three tugs can be delivered during the third quarter of this year.
