Damen begins construction of Antarctic Supply Research Vessel

Keel-laying of the new ASRV in Romania

Following a traditional keel-laying ceremony at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, construction of the multi-mission icebreaking Antarctic Supply Research Vessel (ASRV) is now under way for Serco Defence on behalf of the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy.

The 160m-long vessel, which has capacity for 100 TEU, will ship cargo, personnel and equipment between its home port of Hobart, Tasmania, and Australia’s three permanent research stations on the Antarctic continent, as well as another station on Macquarie Island.
The vessel has laboratory and office space totalling 500m2 providing a base from which scientists will study the biological, physical, chemical and geological systems of the region. On delivery, the ASRV is expected to support the Australian Government’s Antarctic research programme for the next 30 years.
