Cosco Shipping Container Lines has ordered twelve dual-fuel methanol container ships at Cosco Shipping Heavy Industries. The 14,000-TEU vessels will be based on a design developed jointly by the two companies together with Cosco Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute.

Energy saving features on the 336m-long vessels will include an underwater bulb at the bow and an energy-saving device at the stern. They will have a capacity of 13,700 standard containers with a large number of reefer slots to provide refrigerated cargoes to customers around the world.

The vessels will have what is claimed to be the world’s most powerful permanent magnet shaft generator, a bow wind deflector, an air lubrication system, and intelligent systems that meet the third phase of the EEDI energy efficiency indicator. The ships will also comply with the latest cyber security regulations.

The contract is the latest step in Cosco Shipping Holdings’ green and low-carbon transition strategy. In another initiative, the company has signed contracts for the conversion of eight ships to dual-fuel propulsion while other projects include the promotion of all-electric ship operation and biofuel pilot tests.
