It will replace the current vessel used, named Paamiut. The new ship will be 61m long and will be built and equipped for research in both fisheries and marine research and will also meet tough noise reduction requirements. It has a high ice class and should be able to operate bottom trawling and pelagic trawling in Arctic waters, but must be built for world wide operations. It should also be able to take seabed soil samples and observations with a view to recording impact of environmental changes on air and sea conditions. The ship has cabins and facilities for 32 people. It will be equipped with laboratories for various registration and observations of fishing and shrimp, as well as other general marine research.

The Greenland Institute of Natural Sciences has placed a final order with Spanish shipyard Balenciaga SA for a new fisheries research vessel.
