Belgian shipowner CMB and Tsuneishi, Japan, have presented one of the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferries. The HydroBingo was realised through the joint venture between the two companies, JPNH₂YDRO, launched in April.

HydroBingo is the first 80-passenger ferry for commercial use with two hydrogen diesel combustion engines. The newbuilding is an eco-ship that is to significantly reduce the amount of CO₂ and other harmful gases. It is equipped with a mobile hydrogen trailer at the stern, which is designed to deliver hydrogen to the engine via a special double walled pipeline. CO₂ emissions are up to 50% lower compared to a conventional diesel engine, CMB states.

"CMB and Tsuneishi will continue to invest in hydrogen applications for the maritime and land-based industries. This is only the beginning of a very exciting journey towards zero carbon shipping," said Alexander Saverys, CEO CMB.
