The CMA CGM Seine, a 24,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship and the first in a four-ship series, has been delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to the French container line in China.

The 400m-long vessel, classed by Bureau Veritas, has a range of distinctive features which, it is claimed, represent a significant shift to more sustainable, low carbon operations in the ultra-large boxship sector. Its WinGD W12X92DF-2.0 main engine incorporates the engine company’s Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling system, improving fuel performance and reducing methane emissions.

The classification society was closely involved through the ship construction process, participating in engine tests prior to the issuance of an Engine International Air Pollution Prevention certificate. BV also confirmed that the ship’s energy efficiency design index falls well within the IMO’s Tier III standard.

The ship has GTT Mark III membrane-type LNG bunker tanks with a capacity of 18,600m3. BV undertook a range of direct computational fluid dynamic simulations to assess and manage potential sloshing risks in the  tanks. It also suggested potential design upgrades including adjustments to the cargo hold fire protection systems to enhance overall fire safety.

CMA Ships vice president, Xavier Leclercq, said: “Today’s delivery of the CMA CGM Seine featuring LNG as fuel at such a large scale will remain a major landmark in the shipping world, and embodies the engagement of the CMA CGM group toward an ambitious decarbonisation path, leading the way in our industry.”

Matthieu de Tugny, president of BV Marine & Offshore noted the importance of the classification society’s expertise in green propulsion, smart shipping and structural safety. “The successful delivery of CMA CGM Seine marks the mature application of ultra-large LNG dual-fuel container ship technology and underscores BV’s leadership in marine emission reduction, smart equipment, and safety certification.”
