Classification society ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for an “Ammonia-Fueled Panamax Bulk Carrier Equipped with an IMO Type B Independent Fuel Tank”. This is the first design in which the Type B tanks are installed on the exposed deck. It was developed by Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships.
Although IMO Type C tanks have proved popular for ships fuelled by ammonia or other alternative fuels owing to their efficiency and cost, Type B tanks are gaining ground for the large-capacity fuel tanks that are required on ammonia-fuelled vessels.
The classification society has been involved in project aiming for zero-emission ships using ammonia as fuel in terms of safety assessment. Its Guidelines for Ships using Alternative Fuels lays down the standard required to minimise the risks related to ammonia-fuelled ships for the vessels themselves, their crews, and the environment by setting out the requirements for installation, controls, and safety devices.
