Classification society advises owners to install BWMS early

ClassNK has warned shipowners not to wait until the last moment to install ballast water management systems (BWMS). The classification society first analysed the installation dates of its registered ships this time last year and found that deadlines for fitting treatment systems peaked in 2022.
A recent update on that analysis shows that 4,518 ships - out of a total of 7,124 classed vessels that originally required systems - still need to be equipped. The latest figures show that deadlines remain concentrated in 2022. ClassNK's analysis reveals that more than half of the society's ships - a total of 2,486 - have installation deadlines that year. This compares with deadlines for 562 vessels in 2020 and 631 ships in 2021.
