Class approval for wash water monitor

Rivertrace’s SMART ESM (Source: Rivertrace)

A new wash water monitoring system, SMART ESM (exhaust scrubber washwater monitor), designed and manufactured by UK-based Rivertrace Ltd has received a statement of compliance from DNV GL.

The system, which is suitable for open-loop, closed-loop and hybrid systems, monitors and records water quality parameters including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), turbidity, temperature and pH values. These must fall within specific limits as laid down in the IMO’s regulation MEPC 259(68).

The SMART ESM launch comes at a time of growing concern about potential pollutants to air and water from some types of scrubber. Open-loop systems, originally popular amongst ship operators, are now banned in various ports and regions of the world.
