Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC)  has a signed a contract with Norwegian customer Misje Eco Bulk AS to build six eco bulk carriers of 5,000dwt. The contract includes four options for repeat vessels.

Signature already took place in March 14, 2020, but the contract is scheduled to come into effect only in September 2020 with final board approval from Misje. The operator is a fully owned subsidiary of Kare Misje & Co, which provides services from chartering and operation to technical and financial management.

The 89.95m-long vessels will carry cargo including bulks, grain, timber, unit loads and containers. Each vessel is powered by 4-stroke diesel engines with an electric hybrid system supplying additional power through a battery system. The bulk carriers are developed for eco-friendly operation, as they will have lower emissions compared to a conventional bulk carrier of the same size. The concept and the basic design were developed by Wärtsilä Ship Design Norway AS and the detailed design will be carried out by Colombo Dockyard.

The first vessel of the series is scheduled to be delivered in 18 months and the subsequent vessels will be delivered in intervals of four months.

Colombo Dockyard has been targeting the European market extensively, especially for the construction of eco-friendly bulkers, cable laying and repairing vessels, service operation vessels among other types.
