BW LPG opts for more dual-fuel engines

Singapore-based BW LPG has exercised its option to retrofit dual-fuel LPG-powered engines supplied by MAN Energy Solutions on four more vessels. The contract follows its initial order with the engine maker for retrofits on four vessels announced in September 2018.

The latest deal involves the installation of MAN B&W ME-LGIP engines running on LPG which will replace MAN B&W 6G60ME-C9.2 propulsion units operating on heavy fuel oil. The deal follows a successful Type Approval Test of the first ME-LGIP (liquid gas injection propane) retrofit engine completed recently at the works of MAN Energy Solutions’ two-stroke licensee, STX HI, in South Korea.

BW LPG’s Pontus Berg, executive vice president, Technical and Operations, commented: “Increasing BW LPG’s total investment to eight dual-fuel propulsion engines is part of our corporate commitment to sustainable development. Through investments in pioneering propulsion technology, BW LPG modernises its existing fleet and reduces our overall environmental impact.” MAN Energy Solutions’ Wayne Jones, chief sales officer and member of the Executive Board, revealed that the company’s portfolio of confirmed dual-fuel engines now exceeds 400 projects running on clean fuels such as LNG and LPG. This was testament to the company’s leadership within this critical market segment, he said.
