Bulk carrier concept design

The Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) created a new handy-size bulk carrier concept design named “The Green Dolphin”.

Development partners are DNV and Wärtsilä. It is a five-cargo-hold CSR (common structural rules) double-hull bulk carrier that is said to meet current and future expected air and water emissions regulations. With an overall length of 182m, a breadth of 32m, and a design draught of 9.5m, the maximum speed is approximately 14 knots. The hull is designed to provide improved overall performance at different loading conditions, speeds and sea states. A wake equalising duct in front of a large-diameter slow-rotating propeller is said to increase the propulsion efficiency. Furthermore a rudder transition bulb as well as rudder fins reduce the hub vortex and recover rotational losses.
The Wärtsilä two-stroke low-speed RT-flex50 main engine is Tier-II compliant and can be retrofitted to a dual-fuel engine in the near future. Multiple fuel tanks allow strategic purchasing of heavy fuel oil, low sulphur fuel and distillates.
A heavy ballast condition is achieved without using a cargo hold for ballast water and the cargo holds are equipped with compressed air, power and wash water supply. Wash water holding tanks are also included. Wide hatch openings and fully electrical deck equipment improve the loading, discharge and cleaning efficiency to minimise port turnaround time. There is also a ballast water treatment system implied as well as holding tanks and treatment systems for sewage and bilge water.
