Ferry company Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB), which operates sailings on Lake Constance (Bodensee) in south Germany, has ordered two passenger ferries with electric propulsion from German yard Ostseestaal.

BSB said the first of the catamarans will enter service in early summer 2022. The ship has room for 300 passengers and there will be space for bicycles on the foredeck. The open-air deck will be completely covered with solar cells manufactured in Constance, so that additional green electricity will be produced on board and used for propulsion. The newbuilding will be built in sections and transported to the lake in south Germany for final assembly.

It is planned to use the e-boat in triangular traffic between Uhldingen, Mainau Island and Meersburg.

A sister ship is to be built following the first e-ship. The latter could then go into operation in 2025.
