Batteries to be installed on Estonian ferry

Ferry Tõll will be upgraded to battery-hybrid propulsion (Source: LMG Marin)

Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) is to integrate systems and manage a project to upgrade the diesel-electric ferry, Tõll, which is operated by TS Laevad on routes between Western Estonia’s major islands and the mainland. The upgrade is due to take place at the Baltic Workboats shipyard in Estonia during the final quarter of this year and the Tõll is expected to be sailing with battery power by February 2020.
The batteries, supplied by Corvus Energy, will operate in an integrated peak-shaving hybrid system designed by LMG Marin. They are expected to reduce diesel consumption by 20%. In addition to managing the project, NES will supply a Quest® energy storage system, an electric switchboard and transformer and an energy management system. It will also provide engineering support, undertake commissioning and carry out sea trials. Based on a successful project, similar systems will be installed on all four new electric ferries operate by TS Laevad.
