ASC Shipbuilding is ramping up production at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, Australia, where nine anti-submarine warfare frigates are being built in what has been described as the country’s largest-ever surface ship construction project. A key part of the process has been an AUD 535 million upgrade of the Osborne shipyard which is now almost finished.

There are already 700 people working on the AUD 35 billion Hunter Class Frigate Program but this number will rise steadily, the company said – to 1,000 by the year-end, 1,500 by mid-2025 and a peak of 2,400 in 2028. Thousands of other jobs will be created in companies that are indirectly involved as suppliers and service providers in the frigate construction process.

ASC Shipbuilding, Australia’s largest defence construction company, has become a subsidiary of BAE Systems Australia while the nine vessels are built. On completion, the company will be returned to Australian Government ownership.
