Asian tourism group Genting Hong Kong has plans for another new series of ships to be built at its German subsidiary yard MV Werften. Planned are 88,000gt Universal class ships which will carry 2,000 passengers, with the first to be delivered by the end of 2022.
The news was announced at the keel-laying for the second 208,000gt Global class ship for Genting’s Dream Cruises at MV Werften. Genting Hong Kong Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mr Tan Sri KT Lim said: “We are starting the design and building of the next series of ships, the Universal class ships, the first to be delivered by the end of 2022.”
Genting will operate these ships for hotel brands that want to enter the cruise sector, but are unable to do so because almost all cruise construction slots at main shipyard are occupied for many years. The Universal class ships will keep MV Werften with a full orderbook until 2024.
The 342m-long Global class ships are being built jointly by the MV Werften yards in Rostock, Wismar and Stralsund.
