All-electric Future of the Fjords to be launched next April

Sketch of the all-electric Future of the Fjords

The Fjords DA has announced that its ground-breaking carbon-fibre Vision of the Fjords, a diesel-electric plug-in hybrid passenger ferry, is to have a sister. However, the 42m-long Future of the Fjords, also fabricated in carbon fibre, will be all-electric and completely emission free.

The vessel is currently under construction at specialist Norwegian builder Brødrene Aa on the country’s west coast. Following its delivery, the ship will enable up to 400 passengers to experience the outstanding natural beauty of Norway’s west coast fjords.
The Fjords CEO Rolf Sandvik has revealed that the new vessel will have certain differences from Vision of the Fjords. Classed by DNV GL, Future of the Fjords will be propelled by two 300kW electric motors, giving a cruising speed of up to 16 knots. Upgraded IT systems will enable it to meet the digital demands of tomorrow. Meanwhile the charging infrastructure necessary for the vessel to make its planned 700 trips a year is currently under development.
Future of the Fjords will cost NOK 144 million, marking a significant increase over Vision of the Fjords’ NOK 90 million price tag. Much of the extra investment is the result of opting for an all-electric solution.
