Chinese gas carrier owner, Tianjin Southwest Maritime, has ordered seven Alfa Laval FCM ammonia fuel supply systems for new LPG/ammonia ships on order at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding. It is the Swedish company’s first contract for the fuel supply systems which will be installed on three 25,000m3 and four 41,000m3 carriers.

The deal comes after extensive tests of the FCM ammonia systems undertaken jointly with Swiss engine designer, WinGD. The trials included testing of the fuel supply system, fuel valve train, and vent treatment system. It also follows an Approval in Principle from ABS in December for the design of a dual-fuelled MR1 tanker with an FCM ammonia fuel supply system undertaken jointly by Alfa Laval and WinGD.

Peter Sahlen, head of Marine Separation, Fuel Supply System & Heat Transfer at Alfa Laval, commented: “Through research, product development, and strategic partnerships, we are building the solutions needed for a safe and efficient transition to low-carbon alternative fuels. Our deep experience with fuels like methanol and LPG has given us a head start with ammonia, and this first contract validates our commitment to driving decarbonisation in shipping with reliable and innovative solutions.”
