Abu Dhabi Ports and Canada’s Robert Allan, naval architects and marine engineering specialists, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the development of fully unmanned autonomous tugs which will subsequently be commissioned by SAFEEN, the port authority’s maritime service division.

A key benefit of the design will be that the human element of tug operation is shifted from the vessel to the shore, allowing tugs to work in more adverse weather conditions with increased efficiency and improved safety.

Chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports, His Excellency Falah Mohammad Al Ahbabi, commented: “This agreement marks a milestone in our digital transformation and confirms our commitment to ensure the Emirate of Abu Dhabi strengthens its reputation as a leading centre for digital innovation regionally and globally. Adopting digital solutions and keeping up with the changing demands of global trade have proven to be key drivers for economic growth and are integral towards achieving our goal of being a smart port.”
