ABB has launched two new turbochargers, scaled down from larger models, specifically for small- and medium-bore two-stroke engines. The A255-L and the A260-L are smaller versions of the well-proven A100-L and A200-L designs, but provide more power density in a smaller frame size.
They incorporate key features of the larger turbochargers but their compact design enables flexible installation in smaller spaces. For owners and operators, the new models offer high efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, less maintenance and a lower total cost of ownership, ABB said.
The company’s head of global sales for Product Line Low-speed Turbocharger, Alexandros Karamitsos, explained that the new A255-L and A260-L units can operate on all fuel types, including LNG, and on engines designed to meet both IMO Tier II and Tier III emission levels. ABB will supply a full range of matching components to ensure an optimised on-engine specification while the company will offer a full drydock-to-drydock service schedule, with no need for an intermediate turbocharger inspection.
“We believe further focus will be placed on turbocharger efficiency in the future,” Karamitsos said, “alongside higher compressor pressure ratio demands, to enable two-stroke engines to reach their full potential.”
