ABB and DNV GL pioneer integrated cyber security system

ABB and DNV GL have combined their respective expertise to set up and verify an integrated cyber security system on an unidentified large passenger vessel powered by an ABB Azipod® electric propulsion system.

The classification society’s Integrated Cyber Security Dependent Systems verification makes the ship the first to achieve system compliance under DNV GL’s framework for integrated cyber security, the parties said. The system was put in place during the ship’s construction and will ensure cyber security resilience throughout its lifetime. The vessel is connected to ABB AbilityTM Collaborative Operation Centers, a 24/7 global support network through which ABB monitors shipboard systems, undertakes remote diagnostics and offers predictive maintenance support.

The project demonstrates the speed at which vessel connectivity is advancing. Ship systems are more connected than ever before, but shipowners and operators face new threats previously unheard of in shipping as a result.

Juha Koskela, managing director of ABB Marine & Ports, commented: “ABB recognises the importance of cybersecurity in the marine industry and is working closely with shipowners, yards and classification societies to enhance the cyber resilience of ships. As vessels become more electric, digital and connected than ever before, it is of vital importance that we equip and empower seafarers with reliable solutions that are cyber secure.”
