ABB acquires Tekomar XPERT, extends SIKO concept

Integrated turbocharger monitoring capability to capture and analyze operational data

The Tekomar system has demonstrated that it can identify low performance on any engine at any load and recommend actions to raise efficiency and save fuel. The system is designed for two-stroke and auxiliary engines and is already operating on more than 1,000 vessels.
Separately, ABB has extended its SIKO (safety) concept, designed to improve turbocharger reliability by incorporating data from individual units and optimising exchange intervals. ABB states that data derived from individual turbocharger operation can lead to extended turbocharger operation and result in reduced maintenance costs. Under Digital SIKO, extended parts are guaranteed from one drydock to the next. Combining digital connectivity and integrated reporting, ABB is enhancing data-driven decision making based on key parameters in the operation of engine and turbocharging systems, the company claims.

As ABB continues to expand the ABB AbilityTM portfolio and vessel connections to its Collaborative Operations Centers, the company has acquired Tekomar XPERT, a performance analytics and advisory software company, to enable digital analysis of actual ship operation and performance data, as compared to sea trials and tests.
