German cruise operator Sea Cloud Cruises has placed an order with Spanish yard Metalships & Docks for one sail-powered cruise ship for 136 passengers.

It will be delivered in summer 2020. The vessel will be named Sea Cloud Spirit and will be similar to the line’s two previous vessels, the Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, which operate with sail power and also have engines. The 138m-long Sea Cloud Spirit will have roughly 4,000sq.m of sails. Main mast height is 57.7m. Though sailing is the main focus, the ship will be equipped with two hybrid diesel-electric engines each of 1,700 kW. Sea Cloud said it is experiencing high
demand and plans expansion of cruises, especially in the Mediterranean. Metalships will build Sea Cloud Spirit based on the hull of the former construction project of Sea Cloud Hussar. Hamburg-based Partner Ship Design
will create the interiors. Sea Cloud Spirit will offer a large amount of open deck space, a spa/wellness area and elegant decor combined with a classic yacht-style feel. An elevator will connect the five decks. Some 25 of the 69 outside cabins, including the three owner’s suites and 22 junior suites, will have balconies. The wellness area will offer three treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and a hairdressing salon. The separate fitness area will be located on the sun deck. About 85 crew will be carried.
