X-Press Feeders to install CCS systems on two vessels
Singapore-based X-Press Feeders is to install carbon capture and clean-loop systems from Rotterdam-based marine technology company, Value Maritime, on board two container feeder ships later this year. The emissions reduction equipment, which captures carbon, sulphur, and particulates, will be fitted to the 868-TEU Atlantis A and the 1036-TEU X-Press Elbe.
Value Maritime has been awarded the contract by Eastaway, a member of the X-Press Feeders Group, and the installations are likely to be carried out in late summer, the company said. The ships will then operate with a 20% reduction in emissions on voyages in their North-West Europe schedules.
The installations follow an earlier 2021 project in which a Value Maritime Carbon Capture system and CO2 battery were installed on Visser Shipping’s 1036-TEU feeder vessel, Nordica.
The CO2 reducing setup is a completely circular system. The carbon captured on board the vessels will be used to charge CO2 batteries which act as storage facilities until they are offloaded and used in agricultural applications ashore. When the batteries are empty, they are installed again on board ship to capture more carbon.
