Wärtsilä to participate in consortium to develop new container sector business model

With its wide-ranging portfolio of equipment and products, the Finnish company is likely to provide many of the systems required for the new vessel.
The consortium’s goals are closely aligned with those already set out by Wärtsilä in its Smart Marine Ecosystem concept which envisages smart ships sailing between smart ports with the optimum use of resources, and an environment of high efficiency, improved safety and minimal environmental impact. Each of the seven member companies will have key roles to play in developing the high-efficiency new container vessel.
In addition to Wärtsilä and ZGS, a sustainable shipping specialist, the other companies in the consortium are MacGregor Finland Oy, a cargo-handling specialist; Carina Solutions (C4) which specialises in logistics and project management; WinGD, a developer of low-speed two-stroke engines; Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment, a supplier of energy-saving systems; and Gaztransport & Technigaz, a specialist in cryogenic containment systems used for LNG.

Technology group Wärtsilä is to cooperate with six other companies, specialists in their respective fields and headed by Dubai-based Zaitoun Green Shipping Ltd (ZGS), to develop a more environmentally efficient container vessel and a new business model for the container sector.
