TwinShip consortium to support decarbonisation drive

The European Union-sponsored TwinShip project will involve more than a dozen technology and service providers, including shipping companies, classification societies, ports, software developers, and technology providers such as Wärtsilä Corporation. The aim is to improve access to reliable data thereby enabling smarter decisions on decarbonisation initiatives.

The project will run from 2025 to 2028, developing a Decision Support System that can be deployed when deciding on different arrangements for machinery, propulsion, and energy-saving devices for newbuildings and retrofits of existing vessels.

The partners aim to generate reliable cost, performance and emissions data that can then be refined using advanced AI-based algorithms capable of analysing vast amounts of data. The project results will be validated through four pilot vessel demonstrations.

Commenting on the initiative, Wärtsilä Marine’s General Manager, Research Coordination & Funding, Anders Öster, said: “Industry collaboration is essential if the shipping industry is to meet its emissions reduction goals, and this TwinShip project is an extremely important initiative that we at Wärtsilä are keen to support. By working together under this project’s cooperative umbrella, we can make a real contribution to a decarbonised future.”
