Training for seafarers at sea extended with new service
Satcoms provider Marlink, and digital learning specialist, Mintra, have launched a new service providing digital training for seafarers at sea via a ship’s IT network or through the cloud. Mintra’s Trainingportal – a cloud-based digital education system – is now available via Marlink’s Application Partner Programme. The tie-up is aimed at accelerating digital training in the maritime sphere, the companies said, bringing the sector in line with other industries where about 90% of organisations already offer digital learning programmes.
The system will enable seagoing personnel to access more than 300 eLearning courses available in Trainingportal, including an offline version of type-specific, manufacturer-approved EDCIS courses and what are claimed to be the world’s first fully online STCW-compliant courses, developed by Mintra. Courses are available both on- and offline in light of sometimes limited connectivity at sea.
“Our unique technology, designed with the maritime sector in mind, allows our customers to develop competent and compliant crew in a more efficient and cost-effective manner,” said Kjetil Flood, Mintra CCO. “Customers using Mintra’s solution typically report a 30% cost reduction in learning and development while retaining compliance.”
Marlink’s president, Digital, Nicolas Furgé, welcomed Mintra to the company’s Application Partner Programme. “This agreement is another step forward in providing safety and compliance benefits to vessel operators and crews,” he said. “Remote technologies like the Mintra Trainingportal are key to demonstrating the benefits of digital enablement to the wider industry.”
