Rostock: first LNG bunkering operation a success

The first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation, involving DEME’s new offshore installation vessel, Orion, and the world’s largest LNG bunkering tanker, Kairos, has been completed successfully in the Port of Rostock.
Successfully carried out by Hamburg-based Nauticor, this is only Germany’s second ship-to-ship LNG fuelling operation. The Orion, which has been berthed at the Liebherr construction yard where a 5,000-tonne crane is being installed, is the fifth dual-fuel addition to DEME’s fleet, following three trailing suction hopper dredgers and a cable layer.
Bart Verboomen, head of DEME’s Technical Department, commented: “Our recent fleet additions are unique in their market segments as the first vessels in our industry to run on LNG. We want to make sure our fleet is future-proof and exceeds the current environmental regulations. Most of [our new] vessels are already prepared for the new carbon neutral fuels of the future and we will continue to scale up our actions to have the most energy efficient fleet in the industry.”
