Marlink connects 11-ship bulker fleet in Turkey

The Turkish ship operator is using Ozsay Satellite Communications to migrate the ships to the Marlink service which will ensure high-speed maritime broadband across the fleet. The ships will be connected via Sealink VSAT and new 1GB Allowance plans which will provide higher throughput, more stability and improved reliability.
Connectivity will be managed by the Xchange communications management system which will enable the shipping company to manage communications from shore, including the provision of communications for crew who now benefit from low-cost voice calling on board via Marlink’s Local Numbers service. The new set-up will also ensure that Statu Shipping’s fleet management system, Navatom, functions effectively and without interruption. Requiring significant uptime and bandwidth, the cloud-based Navatom system has been developed by Statu Shipping’s software subsidiary, Hive Inc.
Navatom provides real-time information on vessel and company activity and has already enabled significant improvements in performance, the company says. However, relatively slow connection speeds and frequent disconnects were limiting the scope of efficiency gains and Hive Inc’s personnel recommended that further improvements could be achieved if Statu Shipping were to use the Marlink VSAT and Ozsay Satellite Communications combination.
The migration of Statu Shipping’s eleven-ship fleet to the Marlink service was preceded by a three-month trial of the Sealink 1GB Allowance plan with speeds of 3096/512 Kbps on an 83cm antenna. To secure a stable network between ship and shore, Statu Shipping also uses Marlink’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) service which supports operational control via remote access to vessels. Meanwhile, calls from shore to a Statu Shipping vessel will cost the same as a local call, with telephone numbers available from more than 50 countries and 4,000 cities worldwide.
