KR and Hyundai LNG to research cyber security

The Korean Register (KR) and Hyundai LNG Shipping (HLS) have agreed to cooperate on joint research into the application, verification and development of guidance for maritime cyber security systems.

In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed early this month, the partners agreed to verify cyber security systems available for new ships whilst also developing risk analysis and design safety evaluations for them.

Under an IMO Resolution adopted at the 98th meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee in June 2017, flag administrations will be required to ensure that cyber risks are appropriately addressed in ships’ safety management systems no later than the first annual verification of a company’s Document of Compliance after January 1st 2021.

Executive vice president of the classification society’s R&D Division, Ha Tae-bum, said: “The MoU and resulting joint research conducted with HLS will strengthen KR’s capabilities in the certification of new ships, ensuring our organisation’s position as technological industry leader in maritime cyber security sector.”
