Kiel commissions Germany’s largest shore power system

The Port of Kiel has introduced Germany’s largest shore power system capable of supplying two ships simultaneously. The new set-up, called Siharbor supplied by Siemens, will go into test mode during this year’s cruise season at the port, a key departure point for cruise vessels and ferries linking Germany with Baltic states and Scandinavia.
The 16-MVA Siharbor system synchronises different frequency requirements and is designed for challenging environmental conditions, including salty air. It coordinates energy supply for the two ships’ networks to enable simultaneous supply.
Axel Mohr, head of Sales for Distribution Systems, Region North, at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, commented: “Such systems will become increasingly important in the future, also outside of Germany, as climate protection goals are implemented.”
