European southern gateway
The shipping market has indicated a strong strategic interest in these projects which facilitate efficient coverage of the Central Europe market with their strategic location, efficient, world class environmental design and access to the European inland transport network. With the development of two new gateway ports in Liguare and the Northern Adriatic, Italian port systems as per APM have the potential to be The Southern Gateway to the European container market currently served by significantly longer supply chains via Europe’s North Sea. The Ligurian and Northern Adriatic port systems can offer an opportunity to serve a market which ranges from Eastern France to Southern Germany, Switzerland, Central/Eastern Europe through newly developed gateway ports in Vado and Monfalcone.
The development of these new European Southern Gateways could provide a faster, greener and more cost effective alternative to conventional Northern Europe – Asian trade routes. The Port of Monfalcone has strong competitive advantages based on its favorable geographical location at the northernmost port of the Adriatic, the closest port to key markets in Central Europe. Strategic access to the European international rail network’s Baltic – Adriatic corridor provide inland connectivity to key destinations allowing considerable savings in CO2 omissions for global supply chains.
